On Sunday night, President Joe Biden addressed the nation in an effort to soothe tensions following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. He called for Americans, regardless of political affiliation, to “lower the temperature” and “never lose sight of who we are.”
In his brief, seven-minute speech from the Oval Office, Biden emphasized that while political disagreements exist, Americans are “neighbors,” not “enemies.” He strongly condemned the violence at Trump’s Pennsylvania rally on Saturday, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including the shooter, and injuries to Trump and others.
“A former president was shot. An American citizen killed, simply exercising his freedom to support the candidate of his choosing,” Biden stated. “We cannot – we must not – go down this road in America.”
Highlighting a recurring theme since the incident, Biden urged for a reduction in political hostility. He mentioned that he and Trump had a “short but good conversation” earlier that day. Biden saw the shooting as a chance for everyone to “take a step back” and reflect, citing not only this incident but also past events like the Jan. 6 insurrection, the attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband, and the kidnapping plot against Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
“There is no place in America for this kind of violence, for any violence, ever – period. No exceptions,” Biden declared. “We can’t allow this violence to be normalized.”
He acknowledged that achieving unity is challenging but stressed its importance. “There is nothing, nothing, nothing beyond our capacity,” Biden said. “Why don’t we do it together?”
Biden also touched on the FBI-led investigation into the shooting.
The suspect, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by law enforcement shortly after the attack. While Crooks was a registered Republican who had donated to a left-leaning group in 2021, Biden noted that officials were still unsure of his motives or affiliations. It is also unclear if Crooks had any accomplices at the rally.
Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi reported that Crooks, 20, was neutralized within minutes of the shooting attempt. Despite some information about his background, Biden emphasized that officials are still piecing together his motivations.
In light of the upcoming 2024 election, Biden reiterated that democracy is at stake, but differences should be resolved through voting, not violence. He noted that political disagreements are inevitable, especially with the Republican National Convention approaching, where his policies will likely be criticized. However, he firmly stated that “no violence in our streets” should occur.
“Politics must never be a literal battlefield or, God forbid, a killing field,” Biden concluded.
